Yoga and the Hips and Lower Back with Kerry Traylor
January 12, 2010
Yoga and the Hips and Lower Back: Establishing our Tap Roots
A Therapeutic Workshop with Kerry Traylor, R.Y.T.
Lower back and hip pain – even for those who are young, healthy, and fit – are, unfortunately, two of the most common ailments that draw people to seek relief through yoga. Yet the hips and lower back together embody the sacred bowl, or vessel, from which we draw our root energy and into which the breath of life descends and fills us.
Through the use of Anusara principles of alignment, basic anatomy, proper action in the poses, and breathing techniques, we will start to explore the range of motion and freedom in the hips and lower back and learn why the SACRUM is so SACRED…..as well as why the legs are the governors of the lower back. We will discuss why the lower back and hips can be in pain so frequently and how to avoid stress and injury to that area.
Then we will arm you with a specific list of therapeutic exercises you can perform at home to correct the imbalances that make these areas hurt. You will learn to be in charge of your own spine and hips’ health and well-being and learn to revel in the vitality of this sacred region of the body.
No previous experience necessary. ALL levels of yoga are welcome, including rank beginners, and those with chronic pain. Bring water, and a yoga mat. All other materials will be supplied.
Kerry Traylor was certified to teach Anusara yoga in 2000 and has been teaching yoga since 1997 (with a brief hiatus for motherhood). Kerry’s light-hearted, yet dymnaic style incorporates her dance background and her extensive knowledge of anatomy, therapeutics, and yoga philosophy. As a former “stressed out” managemenet consultant, and a current mother of three children, she is particularly interested in introducing her students to yoga’s potential for spiritual renewal.

San Diego, California – Anatomy of Yoga Alignment
January 4, 2010
This two-hour overview session will give you a “look under the hood” at the anatomical foundation of the alignment principles taught by B.K.S. Iyengar. You will apply this anatomy directly as you practice standing poses, forward bends, backbends, twists, and inversions. The class will briefly but specifically show you • how to keep the knees, hip joints, lower back, sacroiliac joints, hamstrings, rotator cuff, and neck safe in the asanas • how to tell which muscles to contract and which ones to release in various poses (including use or non-use of the gluteus maximus in backbends) • how to use subtle details of bone shape and bone orientation to most safely and effectively lengthen specific muscle groups, mobilize specific joints, and enhance the practice of key postures on the Iyengar syllabus • how to use a combination of Iyengar principles and anatomical knowledge to generate your own alignment instructions.
